How dimensional weight changes a parcel estimate
Actual mass and occupied space measure different things.
Space gets a weight equivalent
Dimensional weight converts the space a package occupies into a weight-like number. Multiply external length, width and height, then divide by the service's divisor. A bigger box can produce a higher estimate even if the product inside weighs the same. A smaller divisor produces a higher result for identical dimensions.
Compare like with like
A 50 × 40 × 30 cm package occupies 60,000 cm³. With divisor 5000 its dimensional weight is 12 kg. If the scale reads 8 kg, the higher weight is 12 kg. If it reads 15 kg, actual weight governs. These are arithmetic examples, not current rules for any named shipping company.
Apply rounding in the right place
A carrier may round each dimension before multiplying, use a minimum weight, or apply special rules to certain packages. This tool does not round dimensions. It optionally rounds the higher weight upward to a chosen increment. If your service requires dimension rounding, apply it before entering the measurements.
Do not mistake weight for price
Shipping prices may depend on origin, destination, speed, remote-area rules, fuel, handling and size limits. The calculator reports an estimated governing weight rather than inventing a currency quote. Use it to organize measurements and compare packaging, then check an actual carrier quotation.
Who makes these tools
Handy Orchard makes free calculators for everyday planning: buying flooring, sizing a photo print and comparing parcel packaging. We show the inputs, formulas and worked examples so you can check the result before making a purchase.
